Phased Array Lv.I Course

This course covers advanced ultrasonic concepts that are outlined in ASNT CP105, which are critical for understanding and performing code compliant Phased Array inspections.

Learn how to
• Generate and Receive ultrasonic waves in “phased” groups
• Create a Single Group for Manual inspection and Multiple Groups for Automated inspection
• Focus Beams for optimal calibration and resolution using appropriate Focal Laws

Students who complete the course will benefit by having an understanding of the theory, concepts, and capabilities of phased array technology. This formal course is the first step toward receiving ASNT certification using the UT Phased Array technique.

Course Outline

Day 1
• Terminology, History, Responsibility Levels of Certification
• Theory of Wave Generation, Phased Array

Day 2
• PA Probes, PA Wedges, and Scanners
• Portable and PC based Phased Array Systems

Day 3
• PA Test Techniques, Linear imaging, Sectorial imaging
• PA Calibrations, Sensitivity, Wedge delay, Time Corrected Gain

Day 4
• Probe Exit Point Verification, Beam Steering, Acquisition Gates
• Scan Plans, Data Collection, Single Probe, Multiple Probes, Encoded data

Day 5
• Data Evaluation, Flaw Characterization, and Flaw Sizing
• Reporting

Phased Array Lv.II Course

This course is primarily a laboratory-based class which focusses on scan plans, instrument calibrations, acquiring data, evaluating data, and reporting on your results. It reviews advanced ultrasonic concepts that are outlined in ASNT CP105 which are critical for understanding and performing code compliant Phased Array inspections.

Learn how to
• Use UT Phased Array method to perform UT in Lieu of X-ray per ASME Section V, Article 4 code
• Generate Scan Plans for single and multiple groups
• Perform Calibrations for Sensitivity, Wedge delay, TCG, and Encoders
• Check proper probe function, setup and perform manual linear scans and manual sector scans
• Create Multiple Groups for Semi-Automated weld inspection using various linear scans and/or sector scans
• Analyse your data, characterize indications, and report your findings

Students who complete this course will have successfully logged 80 hours of UT training which is required to achieve ASNT level II certification in the Phased Array method.

Successful completion of this course will prepare a student to take an ASNT Phased Array method, Level II, Specific and Practical Exam.

Course Outline

Day 1
• Generate Scan Plans using ES Beam Tool and ONDT Setup Builder
• Understand proper weld and HAZ UT beam coverage

Day 2
• Perform Phased Array Probe Checks for acceptable use
• Perform Phased Array Sensitivity, Wedge delay, TCG, and Encoder Calibrations

Day 3
• Perform Single Probe, Single Group, Manual scans on Plate and Welds
• Setup Zero degree Linear Scans, Refracted L-wave, and Refracted S-wave Sector Scans

Day 4
• Perform Multiple Group Semi-Automated scans on Welds
• Refracted S-wave Sector Scans

Day 4
• Data Evaluation, Flaw Characterization, and Flaw Sizing
• Reporting of data per given code and acceptance criteria
• Take a typical Phased Array SPECIFIC EXAM
